The Sustainable Landuse Company, Doorian, Glenties Co. Donegal
situated in the "Big Glen" of Glenties, just one mile out of the town.

Coming in over the Highlands and Moorlands it seems like an oasis positioned on the northwest edge of the Blue Stack Mountains, set against a backdrop of beautiful mountain scenery. Close by to the west is a rich variety of coastal scenery with smooth white sandy beaches as well as stretches of rough rocky coastline.

The farm was established in 1988 as an organic farming enterprise. Land, soil, plants and animals are cared according to the "Bio-Dynamic"-Guidelines" based on the work of Dr.Rudolf Steiner in 1924. We are commited to extensive and sustainable landuse methods and to a selfsufficient lifestyle.

By now we manage approx. 750 acres land of which approx. 260 acres are forestry and the rest is either dedicated to farming or left to nature.

Beside these two main enterprises we spread out our energy into other sustainable landuse methods like green(soft)-tourism, a Nature Trail and our Highland-ECO-Camp. Also we are involved in the production of Alternative Energy in form of a small scale hydro scheme producing up to 350 Kw/h electricity.

Features:

There are a lot of interesting features on the land and parts of it are declared as a "Special Area of Conservation" through the "European Habitats Directive".

Wetlands and Blanket Bog on the higher ground makes up the most extensive habitat. It contains Bogbean, Great Sundew and Bog Asphodel to name a few.

On the slightly drier ground you can find Deergrass, Heather, Purple Moorgrass, Cottongrass, Bog Myrtle and many more. A lot of protected animals are living on the ground. Golden Plover, Greenland White-fronted Geese, Badgers, the Irish Hare and others have been recorded. On the lower lying land streams and rivers provide an other special habitat. The biggest river is the Owena, famous for Salmon fishing.

A Promontory Fort is situated on the land with a great view over the surronding area.

Human activities:

The land is worked with between three and six people. During the main season additional labour is taken on, working for board and lodging.

The people here are involved in lots of different type of things like:

  - general farm work   - cooking   - hill-, woodland- and shore-walking
  - milking   - sales and marketing   - wildlife watching
  - attending farm animals   - crafts   - habitat maintanance
  - growing vegetables   - general foresty work   - wildlife-inventorys
