Forests are amongst the Earth's most complex ecological systems, whose dynamic processes and functions we do not yet fully understand. Not only do forests produce timber for our shelter and fuel needs. They also support the largest proportion of the world's biodiversity and are an important source of food and medicines. They provide environmental services such as flood control, soil protection, carbon fixing and landscape enhancement as well as recreation and amenity facilities and socioeconomic benefits. Almost everything we do emits Carbon Dioxide (CO2), from heating our houses to watching television. In fact every person in Ireland is responsible for an average of 'nearly 3 tonnes of carbon going into the atmosphere each year. CO2 is one of the main gases that contributes to the greenhouse effect. Globally, both natural and plantation forests are under threat, primarily from inappropriate management practices. In Ireland, as elsewhere, forests have been managed for economic value, namely timber production, with little attention being given to social and environmental benefits. By planting trees you can help to take CO2 out of the atmosphere. "The Sustainable Landuse Company" is dedicated to planting trees on your behalf in Co. Donegal. Every £20 sponsored will be transformed into a growing tree. A planted tree is a gift that grows and grows! You (or your named gift recipient) will be sent a certificate and precise details of the location where we have planted your trees. All planting sites are professionally managed. Bringing Back Our Natural Forests Concept: It is our intention to establish a major native forest to mark the NEW MILLENNIUM. It will be called the DEMETER Millennium Forest of Donegal, and will consist solely of native tree species such as Oak, Ash, Yew, Alder, Birch, Scots Pine, Rowan, Hazel etc on a dedicated site of approx. 50 acres. For Recreation and Amenity This forest will be an amenity area for those people who are willing to sponsor the project. Each sponsor will have the right to visit the forest and use its recreational facilities such as picnic areas, benches, viewpoints, play areas, public walkways, etc. Certification: The person who sponsors a tree will get a certificate in which the location of where the tree is planted is marked; so the tree can be identified on the site and visited by the sponsor as often as she/he likes. If the sponsor would like to choose the location inside the 50 acres and plant the tree by her/himself; this of course is very welcome. The address of each sponsor and the location of the tree will be filed in a database and the sponsor will be regulary updated about the progress of the DEMETER Millennium Forest of Donegal.
The Start The Start was made just at the years eve of 1999 and a considerable amount of trees are alredy planted. Over a period of 5 years we hope to finish the plantation-phase having established approx. 15000 trees and bushes on a site of 50 acres. After that time a maintenance phase of 10 years will guarantee the establishment of the forest. This project is not subsidised by National or European bodies. The total material-cost of establishment(trees, fences, recreational facilities, walkways etc) will be met by the sponsors. The total labour-cost and the availability of the land itself will be met by Donegal Organic Farm Produce.

Rep Ireland, Ph.:00353-75-51286 Und hier fuer unsere Baumfreunde aus Deutschland das ganze in Deutsch:Die Jahr 2000 Demeter-Wald-Baumpatenschaft zur Wiederherstellung einer natuerlichen Waldgesellschaft Konzept: Aus Anlass des Jahrtausendwechsels,wollen wir auf unserem biologisch-dynamisch bewirtschafteten Hof eine natuerliche irische Waldgesellschaft gruenden. Um das grosse Ereignis auf Dauer festzuhalten wollen wir diese Aufforstung den Jahr 2000 DEMETER-Wald nennen. Diese Waldgesellschaft soll ausschliesslich aus natuerlich vorkommenden Baumarten und Bueschen wie Eiche, Esche, Eberesche, Eibe, Erle, Birke schottische Kiefer, Haselnuss, Stechpalme usw. bestehen. Insgesamt wollen wir ca. 20 Hektar Land dafuer bereitstellen. Zum Erholen und Geniessen. Das Vorhaben soll keinen kommerziellen Nutzen haben und ausschliesslich den Leuten zur Erholung dienen die eine Baumpatenschaft uebernommen haben. Jeder Sponsor wird das Recht haben den Wald und seine Erholungseinrichtungen wie Ruhebaenke, Beobachtungsplattformen,Pfade, Spielplaetze fuer Kinder, Grillplatz usw ein Leben lang zu benutzen. Zertifizierung Jedem der eine Baumpatenschaft uebernimmt wird ein Zertifkat
ausgestellt in dem angegeben ist an welcher Stelle der Baum in den 20
Hektar gepflanzt wurde. So wird sichergestellt, dass jede Person auch
ihren Baum wiederfindet wenn sie den Jahr 2000 DEMETER-Wald besucht.
Wer gerne seinen Baum selbst pflanzen moechte oder bei der eigentlichen
Pflanzung dabei sein will oder sich den Standort seines Baumes selbst
aussuchen mag, ist dafuer herzlich willkommen. Die Adresse des Sponsors und der Standort des Baumes wird in einer Datenbank gespeichert und der Sponsor wird regelmaessig ueber Neuigkeiten im Jahr 2000 Wald informiert. Der Start war am Jahresende 1999 und inzwischen wurden eine beachtliche Menge Baeume gesponserd und gepflanzt. In den naechsten 5 Jahren hoffen wir dass die Pflanzaktion beendet ist und ca. 15000 Baeume gepflanzt sind. In diesen 5 Jahren werden wir die Pflegemassnahmen fuer diesen Wald uebernehmen. Selbstverstaendlich ist jede Hilfe und auch Ideen von den Baumpaten herzlich willkommen. In weiteren 10 Jahren wollen wir dann nach und nach diese natuerliche Waldgesellschaft um Erholungs-Einrichtungen, die wie der Wald selber nur den Baumpaten zur Verfuegung stehen, ergaenzen. Mit Absicht haben wir nicht um eine staatliche oder europaeische Untestuetzung gegebeten. Alle Material-Kosten wie Baeume, Zaeune, Erholungseinrichtungen, Wegebau etc. werden von den Baumpaten(50,00 DM pro Baum) getragen. Alle Lohnkosten und das zur Verfuegungstellen der 20 Ha. Landflaeche wird von unserem Demeter-Hof getragen. Vielen dank fuer Ihre Teilnehmerschaft.
